Season Ending Tournament

Our final tournament of the season was scheduled for Frankenmuth, but ended up getting cancelled at the last minute, so we had to find another place to go. It turned out we picked a pretty good spot, playing in the FAAST Ann Arbor End of Summer Bash. Pool play games on Saturday were rained out, but we were able to make them up Sunday, winning them both to move on to the semifinals as the #1 seed in the single-elimination phase of the tournament. A victory there pushed us into the championship game, where we unfortunately came up short, ending the season with a 2nd place finish.

Grand Rapids Tournament Trip

The Mudcats had a fun, albeit abbreviated trip to Grand Rapids to play in the GameDay USA National Championships. Despite having a five game guarantee, unfortunately we only got to actually hit the field three times!

We won our first game (Thursday morning at 10am) when the other team failed to show up. So instead of playing, we practiced and then grabbed a bite to eat, before heading back to the hotel for some relaxation!

Game two was on Friday and the Mudcats were dominant in a 12-1 victory over the Lakeshore Storm. Tim Hayden hit a clutch, two-out, bases loaded triple, while Brian Caine went the distance on the mound while going 3-3 at the plate.

The Mudcats had a pair of games scheduled for Saturday. The first one was a very disappointing 11-0 loss to the Livonia Patriots in a game where absolutely nothing went right. The Mudcats showed a lot of resilience later in the day in a contest with Flames O'Dette. Trailing 5-3 in the 7th, the Mudcats rallied to tie the game, capped by a two-out RBI double by Kyle Genord. Flames O'Dette scored in the bottom half to pull out the victory, but the Mudcats still managed to qualify for the gold championship bracket of the tournament.

Unfortunately, Sunday's games were all washed out by rain. It was still a memorable weekend for the team with great baseball, time in the pool, a trip to see the minor league West Michigan Whitecaps host the Peoria Chiefs, go-kart rides, and a whole lot of fun!

Mudcats top Kearsley in walk-off fashion

Monday was a beautiful night in Grand Blanc, fitting for the Mudcats' final home game of the season. The home squad seemed to have things under control early Monday night, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Jacob Jackson singled to lead things off. He stole second, and then, with two outs in the inning, Brian Caine drove him in to put the Mudcats on top.

In the second inning, the Mudcats tacked on three more to push the lead to 4-0. The first two scored on bases loaded walks to Justin Pijaszek and Jackson, then Tim Hayden drove in another two out run with a single.

Meanhile, Pijaszek struck out the first batter of the night on three pitches (video 1 below), and needed just 39 pitches to complete three no-hit innings on the mound. Knowing that he would pitch again the next night, he was removed from the game headed into the fourth.

Tim Hayden entered the game to pitch and was able to hold Kearsley scoreless in the fourth with the aid of a double play (video 2 below). The Mudcats tacked on another run when Max Eaton was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on Pijaszek's two-out RBI single to give the Mudcats a commanding 5-0 lead.

In the fifth, Kearsley mounted a comeback. Three singles, two walks, and two hit batsmen led to five runs. Kyle Genord, who entered mid-inning, was able to induce outs from the final two batters, but not before the score stood tied at five.

The Mudcats were unable to break through in the fifth or the sixth, but Brian Caine pitched two shutout innings to set the stage for the Mudcats' walk-off win. Genord and Pijaszek reached base to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Coaches called on Tyler Hitchcock to move the runners over with a sacrifice bunt, but he laid down such a perfect bunt that he beat it out for a hit to load the bases with nobody out. Jackson then lifted a 1-1 pitch to right-center, deep enough to bring home Genord as the winning run (video 3 below).

The Mudcats are now 16-10 on the season as they close out league play with a doubleheader Tuesday at Carman-Ainsworth High School against the Great Lakes Cyclones.

Michigan Mudcats 9 - Tri-City Lightning 3 (game 2)

In game two of their twin-bill with the Lightning, the Mudcats once again jumped on top early. With one out, Tim Hayden was hit by a pitch. After a second out, he advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on Jack Scribner's single to make it 1-0.

In the second inning, Max Eaton and Tyler Hitchcock walked to start off the inning, both eventually scoring on a two-out error. In the third, a pair of two out singles by Scribner and Jason Caine led to a run when Caine stole second and Scribner scored on the ensuing wild throw. Two more runs scored when Eaton, Hitchcock, Jacob Jackson and Justin Pijaszek all walked, making it 6-0. The Mudcats added another run in the fourth when Kyle Genord singled, stole second, and scored on an error.

Eaton was very sharp on the mound, pitching three innings of shutout ball before yielding to Keagan Titmuss out of the pen. His defense did not help him as a couple errors led to three unearned runs in his first inning of work. With the score 7-3 in the fifth and the Lightning threatening to pull closer, Jacob Rau hit what looked to be a sure RBI single, only to be robbed by Hitchcock's diving stab of the liner to end the threat.

In the 6th, Titmuss doubled to lead off. After an out, Hayden was hit once more and then Brian Caine hit what looked like it might be a double play. He hustled down the line though and beat the throw to first, reaching on a fielder's choice. After Caine stole second, Scribner atoned for some earlier fielding miscues with a booming triple over the right fielder's head to score two runs and make it 9-3.

Titmuss closed things out from there, striking out the side in a one-two-three bottom of the sixth to secure the win. The victory pushed the Mudcats' record on the season to 13-5, including a 5-3 record in the GFBL.

Michigan Mudcats 9 - Tri-City Lightning 0 (game 1)

In the first of two against the Tri-City Lightning, the Mudcats hoped to get off to a good start. They did just that, as in the top of the first, Brian Caine set the Lightning down in order. The Mudcat offense then went right to work, with singles by Kyle Genord and Tim Hayden, followed by RBI singles by Brian Caine and Jack Scribner. Jason Caine lined to short and Max Eaton walked, followed by Tyler Hitchcock's RBI fielder's choice. A walk to Jacob Jackson loaded the bases with two out for Justin Pijaszek, who doubled over the center fielder to clear the bases and make it 6-0.

After another one-two-three inning from Brian Caine, Genord led the second off with a walk, followed by another Hayden single. Brian Caine's RBI single made it 7-0 with runners on first and second with nobody out. Scribner grounded into a fielder's choice, retiring Caine at second, but Hayden never broke stride and came all the way around to score. Jason Caine then tripled home Scribner to make it 9-0 after two.

Brian Caine pitched another shutout inning, allowing just one hit, before giving way to Hitchcock, who would strike out four and allow just two hits, as the Mudcats cruised to a 9-0 win.

Mudcats split doubleheader with Goodrich Thunder

GAME 1

The Mudcats got off to a rough start, allowing four runs in the first inning. After that, starting pitcher Justin Pijaszek settled in and pitched very well over the next few innings. The Mudcats chipped away, scoring on an error in the first, and on a pair of RBI singles by Keagan Titmuss in the second and fourth.

The Mudcats could get no closer though as Goodrich tacked on two in the fifth and two more in the seventh. The Mudcats added a run of their own in the seventh to close out the scoring at 8-4

GAME 2

After losing the opener, the Mudcats were sitting on a three game losing streak and needed to come out hot to change the momentum. They did just that.

Kyle Genord led off the first with a double, followed by a Keagan Titmuss single. Brian Caine reached on an error that scored one, and Drew Morningstar tripled in two. Jack Scribner drove in a run with an infield hit and went to third on Jason Caine's hit and run single to right. Morningstar served as a courtesy runner for Jason Caine, and stole 2nd base, with Scribner scoring when the throw was wild for another error. Max Eaton walked and Goodrich brought in a new pitcher with the score 5-0. Mudcat bats went silent from there, not scoring again until the fifth, but the damage was already done.

On the mound for the Mudcats, Tim Hayden worked in and out of trouble all night long. Over the first five innings, he allowed two hits, five walks, and one hit batsman. Every time Goodrich threatened though, Hayden and the Mudcats defense came through.

Goodrich finally scored one unearned run in the sixth, but with the bases loaded, Hayden got the final two outs, to close out the 6-1 victory with a complete game win.

FAAST End of June Classic

Throughout this team's four year history, there have been plenty of highlights and many successes. One thing they had never done though was win a summer tournament. That all changed this weekend in Lapeer at the FAAST End of June Classic as the Mudcats rolled to the tournament championship, outscoring their opponents by a whopping 49-9 over four games.

GAME 1

In the opening game of pool play, the Bluewater Blue Jays jumped on top with three runs in the top of the first. The Mudcats came right back though, with a lot of help from the Blue Jays. The bottom of the first saw four singles, two walks, two hit batsmen, three errors, two wild pitches and two passed balls. When all the smoke had cleared, the Mudcats led 7-3 after one.

From there, Justin Pijaszek settled down and took control on the mound, shutting out the Blue Jays over the next couple innings. The Mudcats stretched their lead with a two-out home run by Andrew Morningstar in the second and a two-out, RBI triple by Jacob Jackson in the third, making it 9-3.

The Blue Jays scored one in the fourth, but the Mudcats answered right back in the bottom half. Kyle Genord led off with a double, and scored on Brian Caine's single. Caine would steal second and score on Morningstar's RBI ground out to push the Mudcat lead to 11-4. That's where the score would stay, as Tyler Hitchcock came in to throw two innings of hitless relief, closing out the game with a strikeout.

GAME 2

The Mudcats got right to work against the Macomb Outlaws in the second game of pool play. Brian Caine's first inning triple plated Kyle Genord, and the Mudcats continued their hot hitting with two outs when Jack Scribner singled home Caine to put the Outlaws down two before they even came to the plate.

Max Eaton started on the hill for the Mudcats, and allowed one run in the first on a double, a single, and a sacrifice fly. That was all the Outlaws would get though as Eaton seemed to come up with a big pitch every time he needed it.

Eaton led off the second with a triple. After a dropped third strike, a couple walks, and a couple wild pitches, Brian Caine added a two-run triple of his own with two out, followed by another two-out hit from Andrew Morningstar to make it 7-2. The Mudcats would tack on two more two-out runs in the third, keyed by Justin Pijaszek's RBI single.

With the score 9-2 in the fourth, the floodgates simply opened. The Mudcats piled on twelve runs in the inning, including eight more with two outs. Morningstar (3), Scribner, Jason Caine, Tyler Hitchcock, and Pijaszek all came up with RBIs in the inning, while the first three of that five each had two hits in the frame. Jacob Jackson came on in the bottom of the inning, closing out the game with a strikeout.

GAME 3

Brian Caine took the mound for the Mudcats against the Goodrich Thunder in the tournament semifinals. He started strong with six strikeouts in the first three innings without allowing a run. With one out I n the bottom of the third, Justin Pijaszek walked and went to second on a single by Keagan Titmuss. Both runners advanced on a wild pickoff throw before Kyle Genord plated the game's first run with an RBI single. Titmuss was retired at home when Brian Caine grounded to the pitcher.

In the top of the fourth, Goodrich broke through for two runs, and appeared to have a third, but the scoring runner failed to touch third base and was called out on appeal to end the inning.

Jack Scribner led off the bottom of the fourth with a single. He went to second on a passed ball and to third on a groundout, before scoring on Eaton's single to make it 3-3 after four.

Tim Hayden replaced Brian Caine and set down Goodrich in order in the fifth. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Titmuss doubled, Genord singled, and Hayden walked to load the bases. Brian Caine bounced into a fielder's choice, with Titmuss retired at home, so with two outs, the game tied, and the bases loaded, Scribner came to the plate. He roped a 1-0 pitch into the right-center gap to clear the bases, and then scored on Jason Caine's single to make it 6-2.

Goodrich scored once in the sixth, but Hayden held them there. Following hits by Hitchcock and Titmuss in the bottom half, the game's time limit was reached and the Mudcats were 6-3 winners.

GAME 4
The top two teams in the tournament paired off in the championship game as the Mudcats faved the Thundersticks. Max Eaton took the mound for the Mudcats and cruised through a 1-2-3 first inning. After the Mudcats also failed to score in the first, the Thundersticks threatened in the second, loading the bases with one out. Eaton induced a pop out to short though, before striking out the next batter to escape trouble.

Thundersticks pitchers would find a different fate in the second. Jason Caine led things off with a single. After one out, Jacob Jackson rocketed a triple over the centerfielder to start the scoring. Tyler Hitchcock laid down a perfect squeeze bunt and beat it out for an RBI single. Keagan Titmuss and Kyle Genord walked to load the bases for Tim Hayden. Hayden hit a soft grounder that the pitcher fielded cleanly but threw away. All three runners scored, Hayden ended at third, and the Mudcats were up 6-0.

Eaton tossed another 1-2-3 inning in the third, and then the Mudcats hit parade continued. Jason Caine led off with a triple, Eaton singled him home, and Jackson's RBI double made it 8-0. Hitchcock walked and a pair of passed balls played Jackson, followed by yet another RBI double by Titmuss to make it 10-0 after three.

In the 4th, the Thundersticks needed to score to fend off a mercy rule defeat, and they managed their only run of the contest.

Needing just one run for a victory, Eaton reached first when he was hit by a pitch. Jackson singled him to third, and Hitchcock drove him home with a line shot to left field to clinch the championship (video at right).

Mudcats 7 - 15u Cats 5 (scrimmage)

In a fun game Wednesday night that featured numerous players on both teams from this year's Grand Blanc JV squad, the Mudcats came up with a 7-5 comeback win over the 15u Grand Blanc Cats. Andrew Morningstar closed out the game with three innings of shutout relief to pick up the win, and Jack Scribner went 3-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs to lead the Mudcats to victory.

The Cats jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings, as the Mudcats seemed sluggish out of the gate. In the fourth inning, Scribner led off with a single and eventually scored on Morningstar's RBI ground out. The Cats answered with one in their half of the fourth to make it 5-1.

In the fifth inning, Keagan Titmuss got a one out single, and courtesy runner Kyle Genord was forced at second on Tim Hayden's fielder's choice. Tyler Hitchcock and Jason Caine each walked to load the bases with two outs for Scribner, who doubled home two to make it 5-3.

The Mudcats tied the game in the sixth when Morningstar walked with one out, followed by back-to-back RBI doubles from Brian Caine & Genord.

With it tied in the seventh, the Cats brought on flame-throwing pitcher, Ryder Brotebeck. After Hitchcock struck out to lead off the inning, Jason Caine walked. Scribner then doubled him home, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-5 before Brotebeck struck out the final two Mudcats.

Morningstar retired the first batter in the bottom of the seventh on a fly out to right. He then recorded his sixth strikeout of the night before nicking Brotebeck's jersey with a pitch. He got the next batter to ground to Titmuss at 3rd though, with Scribner scooping a low throw out of the dirt to close out the win.

Michigan Mudcats 6 - Swartz Creek Dragons 5 (game 2)

In the nightcap of a season-opening doubleheader, the Mudcats won a back and forth affair over Swartz Creek by a score of 6-5, to sweep the doubleheader.

Swartz Creek scored in the first, but the Mudcats answered right back to tie it up when Max Eaton walked, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Tim Hayden's RBI single. In the top of the second though, Swartz Creek added three more to make it 4-1. Eaton started on the hill for the Mudcats and pitched better than the score showed. He wasn't helped at all by his defense, with errors leading to all four runs Swartz Creek scored in the first two innings.

In the third, Eaton singled and scored on Hayden's double, Hayden advancing to 3rd on the the throw. Brian Caine walked and stole 2nd, and advanced to 3rd on the wild throw, with Hayden scoring. Jason Caine then singled his brother in to tie the game at 4-4.

Swartz Creek scored again in the fifth, to push ahead 5-4, but the Mudcats came right back as Brian Caine reached on an error and stole 2nd. Andrew Morningstar tripled him in and scored what would be the game-winning run on Jason Caine's sacrifice fly to right field.

Brian Caine picked up the win in relief, pitching the final four innings and striking out five.

Michigan Mudcats 6 - Swartz Creek Dragons 2 (game 1)

Brian Caine and Morningstar reached base to lead off the fifth, and were on 2nd & 3rd with nobody out when Jason Caine hit into a fielder's choice, his brother being retired at home. A stolen base later though, Jack Scribner singled home two to put the Mudcats on top to stay.

The Mudcats got two more in the sixth when Hitchcock scored on Brian Caine's RBI groundout and Tim Hayden stole home on the back end of a double steal.
